NELLIE DAVIS STAYNER from Steuben Republican, April 20, 1938, pg 1, col 3 Orland Woman Dies from Burns Received Thursday Mrs. Oliver Stayner is Fatally Burned - Clothing Catches Fire Mrs. Nellie Davis Stayner, aged 72, wife of Oliver Stayner, of Orland, died early Friday morning from burns she received Thursday noon at her home in Orland. Mrs. Stayner was preparing dinner when the accident occurred. As she attempted to remove a hot kettle from the stove, using her apron as a holder, the apron caught fire from the stove and the blaze quickly spread to her clothing. Mrs. Stayner, failing to put out the fire with water, ran into the front room and with aid of her husband, extinguished the flames with some comforts and rugs. Most of her clothing had been burned from her body before the flames were extinguished. Mrs. Stayner was taken to the Cameron Hospital where it was found she suffered from second degree burns which covered more than half of her body. She died early Friday morning. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Methodist church in Orland, Rev. Jaycox officiating. Surviving are the husband, Oliver, of Orland; two sons, Frank of Deer Lodge, Okla., and Wynn, of Rawleigh, North Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. Laura Blanning, of Cambridge, Mass., and Mrs. Lucile Hedglin, of Hudson; and several grandchildren, including Bliss Stayner Jr., who was making his home with his grandparents since the death of his parents. Six children preceded Mrs. Stayner in death. ADDITIONAL NOTES: Nellie Helen (Davis) Stayner married James Oliver Stayner on 06 Feb 1886. She was the daughter of Horace Ephriam Davis (10 Mar 1832 - 05 Nov 1912) and Jane (Carroll) Davis (10 Jan 1839 - 16 Oct 1866). Jane was Horace's second wife and she died 5 months after Nellie was born. They are all buried at Jackson Prairie Cemetery, Orland, Steuben County, Indiana. Deceased children: Jennie Carroll (Stayner) Keyes, 20 Oct 1886 - 10 Oct 1926. Dale Davis Stayner, 22 Jan 1888-16 Oct 1918. Bess Eliza Stayner, 07 Apr 1894 - 16 Apr 1928. Bliss Eugene Stayner Sr., 21 Oct 1895 - 17 Nov 1923. Floyd Oliver Stayner, 16 Sep 1900 - 15 Feb 1936. Helen Cordelia (Stayner) Kewin, 16 Sep 1900 - 17 Dec 1932. ANOTHER OBITUARY IN THE POSSESSION OF GRANDDAUGHTER, VIRGINIA EVANS. NELLIE DAVIS STAYNER Nellie, daughter of Horace E. and Jane Carroll Davis, was born at Flint, Ind., May 11, 1866, and departed this life April 15, 1938, at the age of 71 years, 11 months and 4 days. She was a graduate of Tri-State Normal and taught school for three years. February 6, 1886, she was united in marriage to Oliver Stayner. To this union were born ten children, of which four survive: Laura Blanning, Lucile Hedglin, Winn Stayner and Frank Stayner. She also has raised one grandson, Bliss, who was left an orphan at the early age of four. In the year 1906, she joined the Orland Methodist church, of which she was an active member at the time of her death. She will be missed from her place so regularly filled in the Sunday school and church services. She has lived in this community for the past 52 years and has always been interested in church and schoolwork. She is survived by her husband, four children, 34 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, three sisters, one brother, and a host of other relatives and friends.
