PERRY STAYNER from Steuben Republican, January 13, 1915, page 5, column 5 Was born in Richland county, Ohio, Feb. 11, 1829, and departed this life Jan. 8. 1915, aged 85 years, 10 months and 28 days.He was of a family of seven children, one brother still surviving him, Zephaniah, of Nebraska. He came with his parents, John and Sarah Stayner, to Steuben county in 1831, having resided in Jackson township since except part of one year at Clear Lake. May 16, 1831, his father and his uncle, Jacob Stayner, with their families came to Steuben county and settled in Jackson township. Both had been soldiers in the war of 1812 under General Jackson. John and Jacob Stayner and Gideon Langdon were the first permanent settlers in Steuben county, and Perry was the last survivor of those who came at that early date to live in this new land. May 28, 1854, he was united in marriage to (first name Dolly was omitted from obituary) Jane Powers, a native of Allegan county, New York, and a daughter of Stephen A. Powers and Mary Powers who came to this county in 1836. To this union were born six children, four of whom have preceded the father in death, leaving Oliver Stayner, of Orland, and Mrs. Lydia Purdy of Jackson township. In his early manhood, he united with the M. E. church and has remained a member ever since. He gave largely of his time and means to support the church and any movement for the betterment of society. A very industrious man, of strong, robust health, a good neighbor, and in him the community loses one of its oldest men who helped to make this county a land of prosperity out of a wilderness. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, two children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
