STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESRAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1904, page 1, column 5 JACOB STEALY, 25 Sep 1828 - 29 Aug 1904 Jacob Stealy The subject of the above sketch was born in Marion county, Ohio, Sept. 25, 1828, and died at the home of his son in Manistee, Mich., Aug. 29, 1904, aged 75 years, 11 months and 4 days. When a lad eight years of age came with his parents, Rev. John and Susannah Stealy in Steuben county, landing here in Feb. 1836, when he county was almost an unbroken wilderness. He was one of a family of twelve children. The farm home was just south of Fox Lake where Mr. Stealy grew to manhood. In 1853 he entered the general store of Wickwire, Jackson & Moore in Angola as a clerk. The following spring-sixty years ago-he and Vanners Teachout opened the first marble shop in Angola, and a few years later Mr. Stealy purchased Mr. Teachout's interest, and continued the business until failing health compelled him to give up active work a few months ago. The fact that he conducted this business successfully for over sixty years is sufficient testimonial of his business integrity. During this time he was also an active citizen in the welfare of the town, and being gifted with musical talent, he was at times a member of church choirs, helped to organize the first cornet band in Angola, and was a prominent member of it for over forty years. He became identified with the Republican party at the time of its formation, and was always a staunch supporter, and in turn filled many honorable positions at the hands of the voters of the county, although never seeking office. Mr. Stealy was married in 1854 to Jane Current, and to this union were born four children, Eliza Helen, who died in infancy (it is of interest to note that the wife died coincident as to date of month even to the moment, forty one years after the first child died. Rev. John Stealy, of Manistee, Mich., George Stealy, of Fort Atkinson, Wis., and Mrs. Harry Reed of Chicago, the three surviving children all being present at the funeral. Mrs. Jane Stealy died in 1895 and (in) 1898 Mr. Stealy was united in marriage with Mrs. Loie Snow of Jackson, Mich., who survives him. Mr. Stealy was active in the work of the Congregational church from his early manhood, and when able always filled his part in the service, especially active in the song service and was a leader in the old time singing schools. His death will be widely mourned by the friends of three fourths of a century. (Picture included with obituary) ITEM #1, STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1904, page 5, column 4 Mrs. Jacob Stealy will leave Angola soon for Chesaning, Michigan, where she will make her home with her daughter. As a small token of the esteem in which Mrs. Sealy is held in this community, Mrs. Charles Orton and Mrs. John Richardson easily procured the names of sixty or more friends who purchased and presented to her a six dollar umbrella and other presents, and that all might the better be known to Mrs. Stealy, the ladies had Roy Hirst print the names (of) all the donors on a ribbon to go with the gifts. ITEM #2, STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1904, p.5, c.4 RECOGNITION As it will be impossible for me to meet all my friends who so kindly remembered me by presenting me a beautiful silk umbrella, I take this method of thanking one and all, and assure you that I greatly appreciate the gift, and still more appreciate the friendly feeling that it betokens. Mrs. J. Staley (as spelled in the paper) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION; Jacob Stealy, 25 Sep 1828 - 29 Aug 1904, on 31 Jul 1854, married Jane C. (Current) Stealy, 1823 - 10 Aug 1895. They are buried at Old Angola Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. Jacob was the son of Rev. John Stealy, 07 Apr 1793/94 - 17 Aug 1848/49, and Susanna H. (Seitze) Sealy, 16 Jul 1801 - 14 Ma 1875. They are buried at Old Angola Cemetery. Daughter, Eliza Helen Stealy, died 10 Aug 1856 per the Cemetery book but this does not agree with the obituary stating Jane died 41 years after Eliza died. Also states that Eliza was 19 years, 2 months and 22 days of age and the obit states she died in infancy. Perhaps she died at the age of 1 year, 2 months and 22 days of age. She is buried at Old Angola Cemetery. In 1898, he married Mrs. Loie Snow. No other information. Daughter, Mrs. Harry Reed's first name is Jennie per familysearch.org.
