John H. Stealy Steuben Republican 8 Mar 1862, P.3 clm 1 Died-- At Calhoun, KY, February 21, 1862 of typhoid fever, John H. Stealy, Regiment Bugler of the 44th Regiment Indiana Volunteers, aged 22 years 3 months and 10 days. It is but a few short months ago, we beheld our young friend in the prime of life. He left us for the devout purpose of helping to crush this monster rebellion, and as we bid him goodbye, little did we dream that we should so soon be called upon to record his death. But he has gone, his place in the ranks is vacant. He has sacrificed his life for a glorious cause and although he did not die upon the battlefield, yet he died just as much a hero as if he had died at the cannons mouth. His remains were borne to their last resting place on Sunday last, on which occasion, Elder Miner preached an appropriate sermon in the church in this place, as his brother had brought his body from Calhoun to Angola for internment.
