STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1902, page 1, column 6 HUGH STROH, 08 Sep 1816 - 28 Jan 1902 Hugh Stroh was born at Pennvalley, Center Co. Pa., Sept. 8, 1816. In 1835 the family located in Ashland Co., O. After a sojourn in said county, they removed to Crawford Co., Ohio, where Hugh devoted a time to the tailor's trade. In the year 1840, he was married to Miss Catharine Feick. To this union were born eleven children - John, Abraham, Mary, Lydia, George, Elizabeth, Catharine, Joseph, Samuel, Anna and Emma, Abraham and Emma having died in infancy. His wife, Catharine, preceded him across the silent river eighteen years ago, at the age of 64 years. He ministered in the Dunkard church for a number of years. In the spring of 1864, he located in Steuben Co., Ind. After a residence of seventeen years, he moved to Branch Co., Mich., occupying a farm in Quincy Tp, about 1« miles south of the Saints Chapel, fifteen years. Eleven years ago he left the farm and enjoyed life with his children, living with his son, Samuel Stroh, six years, and has since divided his time with the other members of his family. In 1883, he embraced the faith of the Latter Day Saints, and was a faithful communicant of that church when death claimed the temporary victory. He was a great sufferer for ten years; was a man of strong and vigorous constitution, and the conflict between life and death was contested at great length. He died Jan. 18, 1902, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jas. Kiles, near Flint, Ind. The disease which conquered was called pyelitis. His age was 85 years, 4 months and 20 days. He was a kind husband and father, and leaves to mourn his death, two half-brothers, four sons, five daughters, twenty-three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, besides a host of friends. He died firm in the faith of the gospel, and the hope of the first resurrection. The funeral took place Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Saints' chapel. Elder S. W. L. Scott delivered the funeral sermon to a large audience of neighbors and friends who thronged the building to pay respect to the aged pioneer friend and neighbor, now still in the embrace of death. The body was laid to rest in the family lot in Lake View cemetery, Quincy, Mich.
