STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1889, page 5, column 3 THOMAS W. SUTTON, 15 Oct 1844 - 01 Nov 1889 DIED, in Steuben county, Ind., Nov. 1, 1889, Thomas W. Sutton, aged 45 years and 16 days. Mr. Sutton was born in Steuben county. He served in the army one year and eight months, and came home broken in health from which he never recovered. He was the father of eight children, three of whom have preceded him to the better land. A wife, three sons and two daughters are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Thomas W. Sutton, 15 Oct 1844 - 01 Nov 1889, on 23 Oct 1870 (per marriage license), married Frances J. Brode, 20 Mar 1853 - 29 May 1923. They are buried at South Scott Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana. Thomas' parents were: Roswell Sutton, 16 Oct 1820 - 26 May 1895, and his 1st wife, Nancy (McMinn) Sutton, 04 Dec 1820 - 21 Jun 1871. Roswell's 2nd wife was a sister of his 1st wife, Malissa (McMinn) Sutton. His parents and step-mother are buried at South Scott Cemetery. The 1880 U.S. Census for Scott Township, Steuben County, Indiana, from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah, #1254312, T9-0312, page 366A, shows Roswell, age 60, and Malissa, age 58, living there. Frances' parents were: Frederick Brode, who died 20 Feb 1878, aged 72 years, 10 months and 21 days, and Elizabeth (_______) Brode, who died 12 Jul 1889, aged 76 years, 9 months and 27 days. They are buried at Old Angola Cemetery, Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. The 1880 U.S. Census for Scott Township, Steuben county, Indiana, from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah, #1254312, T9-0312, page 366A, shows Thomas and his family: Thomas Sutton, self, married, male, white, age 24 (which is incorrect), born in Ind., laborer. Francis (s/b Frances) Sutton, wife, married, female, white, age 29 (s/b 27 or 28, depending on date of census), born in PA, keeping house. Clyde Sutton, son, single, male, white, age 8, born in Ind. Mary Sutton, dau, single, female, white, age 3, born in Ind. Allie Sutton, dau, single, female, white, age 1, born in Ind. Elizabeth Brode, mother-in-law, widow, female, white, age 67, born in PA. Emma M. Sutton obituary, published in the Steuben Republican, June 27, 1877, page 3, submitted by Jack Brode, states: DIED, Sutton, Near Angola, Wednesday, June 19th, 1877, EMMA M. little daughter of Thomas W. and Frank (s/b Frances) Sutton, aged 2 years, 10 months and 8 days.
