STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 1904, page 1, columns 5, 6 FREDERICK WILLIAM SWAMBAUGH, 17 Oct 1837 - 22 May 1904 Frederick William Swambaugh, was born in Germany, Oct. 17, 1837. His father died while he was young, and when nearly grown to manhood, he came to America with his uncle William Cole, and located in Steuben Co., Indiana, where he lived ever afterward. He was educated in a common school in Germany and attended the district school after coming to this county. He enlisted in Co. A., 44th Regt., Ind., Vols., when it was organized and served therein throughout the War of the Rebellion. He was dangerously wounded-a bullet passing through his body-in the Battle of Stone River. He was disabled for several months, but finally returned to his command and remained with it till it was mustered out. August 11, 1865, he and Miss Isabel Hills, of Steuben county, were united in marriage. To them were born four children, three of whom-Mrs. Emma DeLancey, of Pleasant township, this county; Mrs. Ida Neutz, of Coldwater, Mich., and Rev. Adelbert D. Swambaugh, of Wapakoneta, Ohio-with the mother survive him. Eva, the wife of Calvin Smiley, died at the age of eighteen. In early life Mr. Swambaugh united with the German Lutheran church. He was an ardent Bible student, and always found a place for worship in the local church of his community. While answering questions in a Bible class in the Pleasant View Sunday school last Sunday he was stricken with apoplexy, and died about an hour and a half later. In his death his family loses a kind and loving husband and father, and the community a most exemplary citizen. His funeral took place in Pleasant View church (where he died) Tuesday afternoon, the exercises being conducted by Rev. J. D. Coverston, of Pleasant Lake. It was largely attended, quite a concourse of Grand Army men and neighbors being present, and the pall bearers were surviving comrades of his company. His remains were laid to rest in Lake Gage cemetery, and at his grave Lewis Griffith and E. O. Rose, in behalf of his company comrades, said a few words relative to his excellent record as a soldier and as a citizen.
