CHARLES HENRY TURNER 02 Nov 1862 - 05 Apr 1923 Charles H. Turner, son of William and Susan Turner, died of chronic bronchitis in Orlando, Fla., Thursday evening, April 5, 1923, aged 60 years, 5 months and 5 days. Born on the farm from which he is buried, he lived there all his life, but passed away in Florida in search of health. He graduated from the Orland graded and normal school with the class of 1882. Although a successful teacher for two or three winters, he chose to work the home farm with his parents. Later he bought the adjoining farm and worked both as long as he was able. April 12, 1894, he married Lucy Shutts, of Jamestown, and built the present home the following year. Into this home came three daughters, Hilda, Mrs. Marian Keyes and Willa, who, with their mother, survive him. He was trustee of Millgrove Township and during his administration the new high school was built. To his foresight we are indebted for the beautiful building which even now is too small for present needs. For many years he has been a member of the Orland Congregational Church in which he was a deacon at the time of his death. Everyone knew Charlie Turner. As a young man he was a good student, an earnest teacher, a diligent farmer, a lover of nature. In fact he never lost his youth. He was the companion of his daughters in their hopes and ambitions. Among his keenest delights were their excursions together studying birds and butterflies and flowers. In his home he was all that could be wished, a generous provider, a considerate husband and an enthusiastic father. As a citizen he was honorable and dependable; as an office holder, above reproach; a Christian, clean, generous, sincere. He died as he has lived, earnest and unafraid. Of his immediate family there also remain two sisters, Mrs. C. O. Jones and Mrs. C. C. Mitchell, both of Orland. The funeral was held from his home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev.John Humfreys, of Angola. The out of town friends present were Mrs. Elle Turner Smith, Quincy, Mich., and Mr. Frank Whitney, of Columbus, Ohio. The above information was found in Book #20 in the black notebook collection, #1 through #22, compiled at Audree Siebel Lewis, located at the Angola Public Library, Angola, Indiana.
