KAY LASH COLLECTION, CARNEGIE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF STEUBEN COUNTY, ANGOLA, INDIANA GEORGE WARREN TWICHELL, 21 Apr 1840 - 04 Jul 1911 GEORGE WARREN TWICHELL, youngest son of Benjamin and Sabra Rogers Twichell, was born on Jackson Prairie, Steuben county, Indiana, April 21, 1840, and died at his home July 4, 1911, aged 70 years, 2 months and 12 days. A few years in infancy was spent in Orland. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to this, at that time, their new home. In childhood and manhood and in old age it has been his heart's resting place. The eldest of his father's family, Robert, died in infancy. Mary Twichell Heath, Henry J., William Homer, have all preceded him. Betsy Twichell Sperry and Julia Twichell VanEtta alone remain of that once large family to mourn their last brother. As a youth and young man he shared in the privations and hardships of pioneer life, often rendering efficient aid to the Vigilance committee which was maintained for the protection of the early settlers. Among the first to report to his country's call for troops, in September, 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. A, 44th Indiana Volunteer Infantry; mustered in as a corporal, and promoted to the rank of orderly sergeant. Re-enlisted as a veteran; commissioned as First Lieutenant, and standing shoulder to shoulder with the comrades of that company; passing through all the horrors of the long four years of that severe struggle of the Civil War and returning at the close of that memorable struggle with the few brave boys that were left to tell the story. December 21, 1865, he was united in marriage with Laura A. Scoville, who passed to the better life Nov. 23, 1899. To this union were born four children: Clyde S., Carrie Twichell Kiess; all of whom with their children, 7 grandsons and 3 granddaughters, are with us today. He has ever been one to visit the fatherless and the widow in their affliction. A brave soldier, a loyal citizen, a kind neighbor, and a loving father. His life among us is closed.
