STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1882, p.8, c.3 AND ITEM #2, p.8, c.2 JACOB HORNBECK Van AUKEN, 13 Aug 1810 - 06 Oct 1882 DIED, Van AUKEN---In Pleasant Lake, October 6, 1882, Jacob H. Van Auken, aged 72 years, 1 month and 23 days. Jacob H. Van Auken was born in Pike county, Penn., August 13, 1810. Died at Pleasant Lake, Steuben county, Ind., October 6, 1882, aged 72 years, 1 month and 23 days. He was reared in Montague, Sussex county, N.J., and at the age of 17 commenced teaching, which calling he followed till he was 22, when he married Nancy Strawway, a lady who had received her common school education under his instruction. Soon after their marriage they embarked for the then far west, St. Joseph county, Mich., but owing to the Black Hawk war, they were detained from going there, and settled at Deerfield, Portage county, Ohio. From Deerfield they moved to Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, thence in the autumn of 1860 to Steuben township, Steuben county, Indiana. Here Mrs. Van Auken died four years ago. Sixteen children were born to them, nine sons and seven daughters. Of these seven sons and three daughters are now living. One son was killed by a stroke of lightning eight years ago. Mr. Van Auken's calling was that of a farmer though during the years of teaching he mastered the art of surveying, in which capacity he served the government in 1840 in the northern part of Michigan. In politics he was a firm believer and fearless advocate of the principles which underlie our form of government as taught by Thomas Jefferson. In religion he was reared a Presbyterian, to which church he belonged until he became convinced that the propositions upon which the christian religion is based, to-wit: the immaculate conception, the wandering of a star, the trinity, the vicarious atonement and the doctrine of endless punishment were all contrary to the laws of nature, and consequently could not be true. He believed that the Koran, the Veda Shasta, the Bible and all other books were the production of man. He believed in one God and that the God of Nature, and that the only revelation from him could come through her laws, and that he who studied and learned the most of these received the greater amount of revelation. ITEM #2: Not less than one thousand persons attended the burial of Mr. VanAuken Sunday morning, the services being held in the grove at Pleasant Lake. J. H. Burnham, of Saginaw City, Mich., delivered the address. Subject: "Our Relation to Nature." Music was furnished by Freygang's orchestra, of Angola. Seven sons and two daughters were present, six of the sons acting as pall-bearers, the other son with the daughters, sons' wives, grandchildren and other relatives and friends followed the remains to the final resting place beside the mother in the silent city of the dead.
