THE KAPELL(E) FAMILY TREE has this information included for DeWitt: "DeWitt was in the Civil War, was captured, and spent quite a spell in southern prison camps. He was released and came directly home, evidently to Metz Corners, IN, where his parents were, apparently AWOL not waiting for army red tape release. He was very sick and got home just in time to die. Sarah, in the meantime, had come west with her parents. She also took up a homestead in Iowa, and had her difficulties too. Had to put her children in an orphanage for awhile, where one, George, died. She probably didn't know for sure if DeWitt was dead or alive. DeWitt enlisted in Co. M, 4th Michigan Cavalry in August 1862. He was taken prisoner in November at Stone River Bridge, TN. The Beebe family bible says he died 28 Feb 1863; National Archive records have the same date; Michigan State Archives say 18 Mar 1863." On 20 Jun 1866, Sarah married Milton Bonner, born about 1836 in Indiana. THE KAPELL(E) FAMILY TREE has this information included for Sarah: Lester B. Vaughn wrote in 1974: "Grandma Sarah (Beebe) Vaughn came and lived with us a couple of months at Laton, California, when I was a small boy. When grandfather DeWitt Vaughn died during the Civil War, Sarah moved with the 3 children to Iowa and later to Kansas. The three children were placed in an orphan's home for a time in Iowa where George, the youngest died about age 3." Grandma Sarah later married a Civil War veteran by the name of Bonner, and by this marriage six girls were born, my father James' half-sisters. They were born near Bellville, KS. We lost track after coming to California and my parents died." Amos M.
