STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 28, 1897, page 4, column 3 JOHN W. WILLIAMS, 14 Mar 1846 - 20 Jul 1897 DIED at Metz, Ind., Jul 20, 18987, John W. Williams, aged 51 years, 4 months and 6 days. Deceased was born in Starke county, Ohio, and came to Steuben county with his parents early in life. When seventeen years of age he enlisted for the war, becoming a member of Co. A. 129th Ind. volunteers, Dec. 16th, 1863, and remained in the service until the close of the war, being mustered out August 29, 1865. He became one of the charter members of H. L. Townsend post, No. 405, a Metz, and was post quartermaster until the local society disbanded, ever remaining faithful and true. His final muster-out was given G. A. R. honors with comrades of his own regiment as pall bearers. Funeral was held at residence July 22, under auspices of Metz I. O. O. F. lodge, assisted by G. A. R. post No. 150, of Angola, Elder D. C.
