STEUBEN REPUBLICAN, WEDNESDAY, March 9, 1898, page 4, column 3 FRED B. WOOD, M.D. DIED at the home of his brother, Theodore, in Angola, Ind., March 1, 1898, Dr. Fred B. Wood, aged 55 years, 5 months and 20 days. Deceased was born in Bainbridge, New York, and was the youngest of eight children, four sons and four daughters. When he was six years of age his father, Wheeler Wood died at his home in Troy township in DeKalb county, Indiana, and shortly after went to live with his brother, W. Alphonso, who was practicing medicine at Metz in this county. In August, 1861, he enlisted in Co. A, 29th Ind. Volunteers, was taken prisoner at the battle of Chickamauga and was in Andersonville and others prisons for fourteen months. After the war he graduated from Bellevue Medical College, New York, and later from Rush Medical College, Chicago, and followed his profession with good success until his death. He began his practice at Big Rapids, Michigan, but moved to Garrett, Ind., about twelve years ago, where he has since resided. July 21, 1865, he was joined in marriage with Mary J. Sargent, daughter of Edward Sargent, who resided at Metz. Two sons were born to this union, J. Fordyce and Phonso S., who survive him. Mrs. Wood died May 14, 1893, and on Nov. 20, 1894, he married Mrs. Kate O'Donnell Walke, who with one sister, Mrs. David Ferrier, of Parsons, Kansas, and two brothers Drs. H. D. and T. F. Wood, survive him. Funeral services were held Friday in Angola, Rev. Kemp, rector of the Episcopal church in Garrett, of which deceased was a member, officiating. Burial at Auburn. Brother: Theodore Freylinghuysen Wood, M.D., 02 Jun 1840 - 30 Aug 1925, married Elizabeth (Powers) Wood, 18 Jan 1842 - 05 May 1908, daughter of Calvin Powers and his 1st wife, Maria Emeline (Corey) Powers.
