SOLDIERS OF THE CIVIL WAR
1861 1865

    In 1917, the Steuben Soldier's Monument was erected in the center of
Angola's town square, just north of the courthouse.  The monument lists the names of 1,278 Steuben men who served in the Civil War, 280 of whom never returned.
The monument is affectionately known locally as "The Mound" .

                         have a new birth for freedom,

                             of the people,
                               by the people,
             and for the people,
shall not perish from the earth."

It is with great respect we pay tribute to our Civil War soldiers that are included in the Steuben Genealogy Page. They are honored and remembered by their families and the community. The monument in Angola was erected in 1917, just a brief 82 years ago. Columbia and her soldiers still stand today with pride and honor, offering the memory of love and peace to all who pass by.

Columbia is an inspiration. She holds her wreath of peace in her hands looking towards the sunrise: with visions of a new and brighter day. Our country has had many troubled times and will continue to have more. However, Columbia still remains strong to the wind of adversity. Holding a symbol of peace, believing...peace can come true.

Columbia is guarded by our brave soldiers who where willing to give their lives for her. Without their sacrifice, courage and heroism, all of our lives of today surely would be different.
 

This page is dedicated to all the men who did not return, whether through illness, accident, war injury or death in war.
