Richard S. Albert  

March 10, 1918 - Sept. 20 2005  

SOUTH BEND - Richard S. Albert, 87, of Peashway Street, died Tuesday in Hospice House of St. Joseph County.  Survivors include his wife Evelyn (Gruber); and a daughter, Susan Clark of South Bend.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Matthew Cathedral.  Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be said at 5 p.m.

Richard S. Albert March 10, 2008 - Sept. 20, 2005       

Richard S. "Dick" Albert, 87, of South Bend, Indiana passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2005 in Hospice House in South Bend.       

His life began on March 10, 1918, in Mishawaka, Indiana, born to Solomon and Blanche (Feldman) Albert.  Dick grew up in Mishawaka and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1936.  He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1940.  While attending Notre Dame he was president of the Notre Dame Villagers.       

Dick then went to work for the Oliver Corporation.  He served in the Navy during W.W.II as a lieutenant commander.  On October 28, 1944, he married Evelyn Gruber.  Following the war he continued working for the Oliver Corporation.  In 1956 Dick started his own farm equipment business, Albert Sales and Service.  In 1971 Dick sold the business and went to work for Fruehauf Trailers as credit manager until he retired in 1983.       

While Dick was in business, he was active in the Centre Township Fire Department, serving as assistant chief.  He belonged to Kiwanis and was a founding member of St. Jude Ognib Club.  He served as justice of the peace for Centre Township and was president of the Gilmer Park Anti-Annexation Committee.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge 235 and the University Club.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame.       

Dick enjoyed Notre Dame football, spending may Saturdays tailgating at both home and away games.  He also enjoyed spending time at the family cottage, especially with his grandchildren.       

Dick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn; a daughter, Susan (Ken) Clark of South Bend; and two grandchildren, Sara Clark of Granger and Michael (Mary) Clark of Elkhart.       

He was preceded in death by his sister, Marietta Spencer.       

Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 PM Friday, September 23, 2005, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a Rosary will be held at 5 PM.       

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Saturday, September 24, 2005, in St. Matthew Cathedral, where friends may call one hour prior to the Mass.  Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame.       I

n lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop Crowley Education Fund at St. Matthew School, 1015 E. Dayton, South Bend, IN 46613; the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
