Wilmer E. Armstrong

Wilmer E. Armstrong, 88, residing on Sunnymede Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 12:36 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. He retired in 1977 from the South Bend Community School Corporation following many years of teaching. Mr. Armstrong was born on April 11, 1912, in Foley, Ala., to the late William and Edna (Marshall) Armstrong. He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas Armstrong.

 

On June 8, 1939, in Elkhart County, Ind., he married Frances Burns, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Phillip Armstrong of Escanaba, Mich., and Robert Armstrong of South Bend; two grandsons, Jason Armstrong of Denver, Colo., and Joshua Armstrong of Atlanta; and a brother, Thomas Armstrong of Chicago.

 

Mr. Armstrong served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He later served during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged as lieutenant from the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1961.

 

Private services will be held at a later date.
