Harry H. Bailey

Harry H. Bailey, 78, of Hollywood Place, South Bend, Ind., died following an illness on Tuesday, Feb. 26, in his residence. Harry was born April 5, 1923, in Gentry County, Mo., to Walter and Beulah (Wolf) Bailey. He had lived most of his life in South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, Roy Harold Bailey.

 

On May 30, 1959, Harry married Wanda Krips in Cass County, Mich. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Doug (Kathie) Bailey of South Bend; and a stepdaughter, Karen (Jim) Nolan of Granger, Ind.; a granddaughter, Tracie (Rick) Stewart; and two great-grandsons, Will and R.J. Stewart; a sister, Betty (Jack) Reider of South Bend; and by two brothers, Howard Bailey of Niles, Mich., and Kenneth (Liz) Bailey of Richmond, Ind.

 

Harry was a salesman for Automotive Testing and more recently served as the Veterans Service Officer of St. Joseph County. He was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and had served the organization as their service officer and as Sergeant-at-Arms for the Indiana State DAV. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #50, and served as the District Service Officer for eight years for the American Legion. As a member of the VFW Post 624, he served for eight years as the service officer. He established Chapter 1995 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Other organizations that Harry belonged include the Marine Corps League and the 40 & 8 of the American Legion.

Harry was responsible for establishing the first DAV van to transport veterans to and from V.A. Hospitals, and helped raise nearly $250,000 for the van fund. Harry was also instrumental in establishing the V.A. Clinic in South Bend.

 

Funeral services for Harry H. Bailey will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Entombment will take place at Riverview Cemetery, where military services will be held.

 

Visitation for Harry H. Bailey will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 28, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Harry's name to the Indiana DAV Van Fund, West 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN; or to the Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.
