Thomas J. Baker, 85, of State Road 2, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at 11:57 a.m. on Friday, April 9, in the Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Center, New Carlisle, Ind.

Mr. Baker was born on Sept. 4, 1913, in Greenfield, Tenn., and resided in the Michiana area since 1947, coming from Greenfield.

On Jan. 18, 1947, in South Bend, he married Mary C. Morris, who survives.

He is also survived by a son, Thomas E. (Susan) Baker of South Bend; a sister, Matte Box of Union City, Tenn.; and by four wonderful loving grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, James D. Baker on Sept. 22, 1991.

Mr. Baker retired from AM General Corporation in 1975 after many years of service. He was a member of the UAW Local Union at AM General and was a member of the Lydick United Methodist Church.

Visitation hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today in Hanley and Sons ''Southwest Chapel'' Funeral Home located at West Ireland Road and Indiana 23, South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Mausoleum, Osceola, with Rev. Kevin Buckley officiating.

The family requests that all memorial contributions be made to the Lydick United Methodist Church or to the New Military Honor Park, South Bend.

The Hanley and Sons ''Southwest Chapel'' Funeral Home handled services and extend heartfelt sympathy to the Baker family.
