William A. Ball

William A. Ball, 79, of Santa Monica Drive, Granger, Ind., passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, in Hospice House. William was born on Oct. 29, 1922, in South Bend, Ind. William married N. Lucille Ball on May 26, 1946. She preceded him in death along with his father, Omer Ball; his mother, Mary (Snyder) Ball; and by his stepfather, Harlan Pearce.

 

William served with the 47 Bomb Group of the Army Air Force in Africa and Italy as a sergeant airplane mechanic from 1942 through 1945. He was awarded a Bronze Star, Good Conduct and Distinguished Unit awards. William was hired in at Bendix Corporation on June 1, 1956, and retired from the company (Allied Signal) on Oct. 1, 1982. After he retired he worked at Martin's Supermarket as a bagger, and Mogul Rubber in Goshen, Ind., as a maintenance/machine repair foreman. Bill was an avid fisherman and model airplane enthusiast, also enjoyed photography and watching auto racing, as well as his beloved (and beleaguered) Cubs.

 

William is survived by two sons, Gregg A. Ball of Elkhart, Ind., and Scott W. Ball of South Bend; daughter-in-law, Melissa (Milroy) Ball; his friend and companion, Marsha R. Balsley of Granger; and by a sister, Tula Morrow of South Bend.

 

Family and friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral chapel. Burial is to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The family asks that donations be made to Hospice House of South Bend.
