SOUTH BEND - Marjorie L. Barkley, 101, of South Bend, IN, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Mrs. Barkley retired from South Bend Community School Corporation after serving 42 years as an elementary teacher. She was born on July 16, 1908, in South Bend, IN, to Bert and Mabel (Lee) Matthews and remained a lifelong resident. On March 1, 1941, in South Bend, IN she married Charles A. Barkley who preceded her in death on August 1, 1988. Mrs. Barkley is survived by her three sons, Ernest A. (Sherrie) Barkley of Mishawaka, Robert C. (Mary Susan) of South Bend and John (Susan) of South Haven, MI; nine grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Katherine Harris and Elizabeth Rindfusz; and her brother, Robert Matthews, all preceded her in death. She received her first Teaching Certificate in 1928 after earning her Teaching Degree at Manchester College. She retired from the Indiana State Teachers Association where she had been a member for many years. Mrs. Barkley volunteered for over ten years at Osteopathic Hospital in South Bend; and was a member of the Laubach Literary Council. She is survived by many loving cats. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Palmer Funeral Home - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave, South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin, pastor of Northway Church of Christ will officiate. Entombment will take place in Highland Mausoleum, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 PM Friday and one hour prior to services on Saturday in the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Marjorie L.
