Sister M. Bernadetta CSC, 74, of St. Mary’s Convent, died Wednesday in St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend after a long illness. Born Florence Marie Barnard on Feb. 26, 1906 in South Bend, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on Feb. 11, 1934. She was received as a novice Aug. 15, 1934 and professed her final vows Aug. 16, 1936. She was graduated from the former St. Joseph Academy in 1925 and St. Mary’s College in 1929. She received a degree in library science from Rosary College, River Forest, Ill. in 1949. Prior to her entry in the congregation she taught in South Bend public schools. Her teaching assignments while in the congregation included St. Joseph Academy, St. Joseph High School and St. Mary’s Academy all in South Bend, as well as schools throughout Indiana and Michigan. She became a resident of Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent in 1878, and later that year she was transferred to St. Mary’s Convent, where she was living at the time of her death.

 

Friends may call up to the time of services in the convent parlors where rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Our Lady of Loretto Church, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on the campus.
