Rev. Joseph D. Barry CSC, 82, died early today in Holy Cross House at Notre Dame. Rev. Barry had served at Christ the King and St. Joseph parishes in South Bend, and at the University of Notre Dame as prefect of religion, director of student affairs, and prefect of discipline. He also was chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend from 1961 to 1963. He was born Dec. 7, 1902 in Syracuse, N.Y., and professed his first vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross Aug. 15, 1925. He was ordained to the priesthood June 24, 1933, having completed his studies at the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College, Washing DC. He was a chaplain in the Army from 1941 to 1946.

 

He left South Bend in 1963 to become chaplain at Archbishop Hoben High School in Akron, Ohio, where he remained until 1982. He then returned to Holy Cross House where he was in residence at the time of his death.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church with burial in the Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Moreau Seminary where a prayer vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m.
