Walter E. Bartholomew

March 26, 1935 - March 11, 2000

Walter E. Bartholomew, 64, passed away peacefully at 4:25 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, at the Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., with his wife and children by his side.

Walter was the son of Hilma and Boyd Bartholomew of Erie, Kansas.

 

He graduated in 1957 from University of Pittsburg, Pittsburg, Kan., where he met and married the former Darlene E. Darling of Hutchinson, Kan. in 1955. He worked for Sears for 15 years before settling in South Bend, in 1971, where he coached his Clay Junior Baseball team to a championship in 1973 and was active as a Weblos Scout Leader. Walter had spent the last 25 years at the University of Notre Dame's Administrative Computing Department. He also served on the Notre Dame Credit Union's board of directors for over 15 years, the last 12 as vice-chairman. For the last 15 years he enjoyed being an avid antique collector, dealer and woodworker.

 

He is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene; his mother, Hilma; his son, Bradley of Granger, Ind.; his daughter, Brenda (Rob) Lloyd of Houston, Texas; his three grandchildren, Kathleen, Christopher and Joseph Lloyd of Houston; his sisters, Nancy Bartholomew Kernick of Erie, Ruth Ellen (Michael) Simpson of Pittsburg; his bothers, Louis (Fran) Bartholomew of Springfield, Mo., Tom (Terri) Bartholomew of Erie; and by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his father, Boyd Bartholomew and his brothers, John, Boyd Lee and George.

 

Friends and family may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 13 at the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14 in the Community Congregational Church, 31 and Cleveland Road. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
