Robert Mitchell Basham

Robert "Castro" Mitchell Basham, 68, of North Liberty, Ind., passed away on Monday, Aug. 5, in the presence of his loving wife and children, following a courageous battle with cancer.

 

Robert was born on Aug. 4, 1934, in White Plains, Ky. He was the son of the late Zelma Caroline and Bertie Thomas Basham. Robert was also preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Mae Springer.

 

Robert lived most of his life in North Liberty. He retired in August 1999 from Small, Inc., in North Liberty.

 

On Feb. 26, 1955, in Mishawaka, Ind., he married his one and only love, Patricia "Dorothy" Woodruff, who survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Teresa (Shawn) Mattke of Plymouth, Ind.; two sons, Robert Mitchell (Lila Artley) Basham II (Julie) of Elkhart, Ind., and Charles Andrew (Maria Ferch) Basham of South Bend; three grandchildren, Jeremy Basham, Lisa Mattke and Amber Mattke; one brother, Leroy Basham of Lakeville, Ind.; and by three sisters, Dorothy Louise Warner, Abigail Doty and Ellen Josephine Clemans, all of Mishawaka.

 

Robert was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He cared deeply for his family, friends and those who surrounded him. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and playing the fiddle at Blue Grass Festivals.

 

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 7, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka, where a memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Cremation will take place.
