Paul J. Batalis, 70, of Madison Street, South Bend, Ind., died following a lengthy illness at 3:27 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, in his residence. Mr. Batalis was born on Nov. 30, 1930, in South Bend, to James and Catherine (Gregorious) Batalis, and was a lifetime area resident. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother, Milton Batalis.

 

On Dec. 2, 1950, in Jeffersonville, Ind., he married Betty Jones, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Paula (James) Thompson of Edwardsburg, Mich.; a son, James (Kimberly) Batalis of Mishawaka, Ind.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, E. Frances Siomos of South Bend; and two brothers, Peter (Lois) Batalis of Phoenix, Ariz., and James (Edith) Batalis of Bellevue, Wash.

 

Mr. Batalis was the manager of Main Coney Island in South Bend until 1972. He retired from the maintenance department of Liberty Mutual Life Insurance in Mishawaka. He had been a member of St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church, AHEPA, and BPOE Lodge #235.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, with Br. Steve Nani, CSC, of Hospice of St. Joseph County officiating. Cremation will take place, with burial to follow services on Monday at Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Feb. 25th, in the funeral home, where a Trisagion service will be held at 6 p.m.
