Virginia H. Bates

SOUTH BEND - Virginia H. "Ginny" Bates, 83, residing in South Bend, passed away at 11:05 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Southfield Village. She was born September 11, 1924, in Memphis, TN, to Alvan A. and Vera Pearl (Logan) Hitchcock.

 

On August 4, 1946, in Millington, TN, she was united in marriage to Max H. Bates. Her loving husband, Max, of 62 years survives her. Also surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Judith and John Pasquale of Fort Wayne, IN; her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Anita Bates of Fort Wayne, IN. Two grandchildren, Lindy (Rich) Locsmondy and Traci Bates; and three step-grandchildren, Annette (Trey) Shaver, Suzanne (Christopher) Thompson, and Christine (Tilford) Randolph survive Ginny as well as eleven step-great grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Bates retired as Supervisor at Carleton Financial Computation, Inc. She had been a member of First Presbyterian Church, South Bend since 1950, where she served on the Board of Trustees, and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of Gamma Kappa Chapter of Sigma Alpha Sorority for over 50 years, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Elks Lodge #235, South Bend.

 

Services for Mrs. Bates will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2008, in First Presbyterian Church, 333 West Colfax Street, South Bend. Rev. David Morrow and Rev. Don Neely will officiate. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from Noon until service time Monday at the church. Contributions in memory of Virginia H. Bates may be offered to the Malawi Water Well Project c/o First Presbyterian Church, 333 West Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46601, or to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, is assisting the Bates family with arrangements.
