SOUTH BEND - Verna L. Batteast, 39, of 1414 N. O'Brien St., died at 12:25 p.m. Friday in Memorial Hospital after an illness. Mrs. Batteast had been a day-care coordinator at Hansel Center. She was born July 10, 1955, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident.

On Dec. 20, 1988, in South Bend, she married Ronald Batteast. He survives with a daughter, Shyra G. Batteast of South Bend; two sons, Jaron and Ryan Batteast of South Bend; her father, Chester Ellis Sr. of South Bend; six sisters, Kathlyn J. Ellis, Teria J. Farrell, Gretchen M. Ellis, Carmen D. Ellis, Lisa D. Hunt-Benman and Theresa A. Ellis, all of South Bend; and three brothers, Willie J. Hubbard, Chester Ellis Jr. and Glen L. Ellis, all of South Bend. She was a member of New Horizon Outreach Ministry. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society.
