Wayne A. Batteast Sr.

March 13, 1924 - June 22, 1996

Wayne Alex Batteast, Sr., 72, of 403 Cottage Grove, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, following a short illness. He was born March 13, 1924 in Wilkinson County, Miss., to the union of Clarence and Effie (Tillery) Batteast. He moved to South Bend in 1965 from Natchez, Miss.He is survived by his widow Jacqueline Wilson-Batteast whom he married on Aug. 6, 1949. He also leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Helen Batteast-Williams of Granada Hills, Calif.; two sons, Cary J. (Barbara) Batteast, and Wayne Alex (Janice) Batteast, Jr., both of South Bend; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Batteast of South Bend and Rayford Batteast of Natchez, Miss. A brother, William preceded him in death.

 

Mr. Batteast retired in 1983 from Midwest Operating Engineers, Local 150, as a heavy duty operations engineer. He was a member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a co-chairman of the Deacon Board, church treasurer and numerous other capacities of the church. He was a United States Army Veteran and a member of St. Peter Lodge. Also, he was a Little League baseball coach for many years, having coached many championship teams for North Side Little League. In recent years he developed a passion for gardening.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Friends may call Wednesday from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Alford's Mortuary, 1222 Napier St., South Bend. Burial will be held in Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund.
