Charles E. Battles

Charles E. Battles, 71, of E. Monroe St. in Lakeville, died at 2:19 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, in the Lu Ann Nursing Home in Nappanee after an illness.

Charles was born July 16, 1933, in Mishawaka, Ind., to the late Franklin and Helen (Seitz) Battles.

He married Alma Jean Sauer in St. Joseph County, Ind. in 1956. She died in October 1980. On Nov. 12, 2004, he married Carolyn Slabaugh in Nappanee, Ind. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Connie Sue (Kenneth) Ankin of Edwardsburg, Mich. and Sandy Kay (Jeffrey) Holderbaum of Lakeville, Ind.; one son, Jerry L. Battles of Elkhart; three step-children; ten grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Charles was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be truly missed by all.

Charles retired from the St. Joseph County Highway Department where he had been employed for many years. In addition to also being a farmer, Charles loved to attend auctions where he was known not by his name, but rather as "double o".

Friends may call from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the Hahn Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. The Rev. Odell R. Hughes will officiate and cremation will take place with burial at a later date at Bremen Cemetery.
