Sister Kathleen Bauer CSC

Sister Kathleen Bauer (Sister Mary Josella), CSC, 85, was born in Nix Settlement, Columbia City, Ind., to the late Edward Bauer and Margaret Ness Bauer. She is survived by her sister, Lucille Amburn of Columbia City; brothers, Robert Bauer of Santa Ana, Calif., and Kenneth Bauer of Columbia City; and nieces and nephews. Sister is also survived by her cousin, Sister Joan Elizabeth, CSC, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind.; and by a niece, Sister Colleen Bauer, SSND, of Goshen, Ind. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

 

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross in 1933 and made final profession in 1938. She began teaching in 1935, and taught in Woodstock, Evergreen Park, Cairo and Danville, Ill., for 14 years and in South Bend, Fort Wayne, Michigan City, Anderson and Plymouth, Ind., and Flint, Mich., for a total of 24 years. Sister taught at Holy Cross School and was principal at Saint Joseph's School and Saint Mary's Campus School, all in the South Bend area. She also taught at Saint Michael's School in Plymouth. In 1974, Sister was assigned in secondary education at Saint-Mary-of-the-Wasatch, Salt Lake City, Utah. After that, Sister was assigned for four years as diocesan director of religious education for the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese. This was followed by five years as religious education coordinator, first in South Bend and then in Dowagiac, Mich., and five years as pastoral associate at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish, Fort Wayne, Ind. In 1990,

 

Sister was assigned to Saint Joseph's High School where she directed the program for senior students in Christian Services. In 1993, Sister retired to Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent and was in service to the community. In 1995, Sister moved to Rosary Convent, and later to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind., where she was active in the ministry of prayer until her death. Wake services will be at 7 p.m. today, July 9, in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
