Sister M. Anna T. Bayhouse

April 27, 1913 - Dec. 23, 2002

Sister M. Anna Teresa (Louise Elizabeth Bayhouse), C.S.C., 89, was born April 27, 1913, in Boise, Idaho, to the late Alfred and Anna T. Kels Bayhouse. She was the second of four children.

She is survived by her sister, Sister Charlotte Bayhouse, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind.; nieces, Patricia Bayhouse of Denver, Colo., and Donna Jean Clark of Loon Lake, Wash.; and by her nephews, Paul Bayhouse of San Jose, Calif., and Kevin Bayhouse of Boise.

Sister attended St. Teresa's Academy, Boise, and after entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1929, she attended Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, Calif., where she received her bachelor of arts in French and Spanish. In 1941 Sister received her master's of arts in French from Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., receiving her Ph.D. Sister was the first woman to receive a doctorate in linguistics from Georgetown University.

Sister began her teaching career in elementary education at St. Paul's School, Los Angeles, and the secondary level at Holy Rosary Academy, Woodland, Calif. She transferred to St. Mary-of-the-Wasatch, Salt Lake City, Utah, teaching secondary and college classes. Returning to Boise in 1952, to Saint Teresa's Academy, Sister was administrator and teacher in the senior high. She moved to Mountain View, Calif., Holy Cross High School, and then to Bishop Gorman Senior High School, Las Vegas, Nev. Back to Utah in 1960, she was principal and teacher at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, Salt Lake City. In 1961-1972, Sister was named professor at Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C., and in 1972-1979 she was professor and chairman of the Language Department at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind.

In 1977, Sister Anna Teresa spent several months in France on sabbatical, touring and thoroughly enjoying her time of immersion in French.

After her time at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Sister spent time caring for a brother in Arizona and then returned to California in 1980 to teach in San Joaquin Memorial High School until 1989. Sister retired to Saint Catherine's, Ventura, and was there until 1999 when she came to Rosary Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Sister was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Reception of the body and wake services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.
