SOUTH BEND - Vernon O. Bedford, 87, of Park Avenue, died at 2:07 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. Mr. Bedford retired in 1976 from Elkhart Housing Authority as a supervisor.

He was born Oct. 9, 1908, in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, and lived in South Bend since 1964. On March 26, 1955, in Battle Creek, Mich., he married Jean H. Demott. She died April 7, 1984. On May 9, 1989, in South Bend, he married Maralynn Pepple. She survives with a daughter, Carolyn Personette of Walkerton; three sons, Fred V. of Granger, William S. of Battle Creek, and Jack B. of Three Rivers; a stepson, James W. Pepple Jr. of South Bend; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A daughter, Jan K. Bedford, died in 1955; and two grandchildren preceded him in death.

He was a member of Battle Creek Elks Lodge, Elkhart Moose Lodge, Retired Professional Basketball Players Association, and Million Dollar Roundtable of Equitable Life Insurance Co. He played professional basketball in Battle Creek, sponsored by Kellogg Co.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Leukemia Foundation.
