Kenneth Berkey

Kenneth Berkey, 32 years old, formerly of this city and well known as an athlete in the South Bend High school and at Notre Dame university, died Tuesday at Camaguey, Cuba.  Death is known to have resulted from injuries received in an accident, details of which have not been received by his family in this city.

 

Surviving are his wife, Mayette, and one stepdaughter, Diana, both in Cuba; his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. S. H. Berkey, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Vera Schamel, of this city, and Mrs. Clinton C. Brown, of Winthrop, Mass.

 

Mr. Berkey played on football teams at Notre Dame university for two years and at Wabash college, Crawfordsville, Ind., for one year, and was a member of football, baseball and track teams during his High school career.  He graduated from the local school in 1912.

 

During the world war he served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. marines overseas and had resided in Cuba since the signing of the armistice.
