SOUTH BEND - Mary P. Bernath, 86, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008, in Memorial Hospital. Mary was born on May 2, 1921, in South Bend, to Joseph and Mary (Takacs) Nagy. She had been employed by the South Bend Community School Corp. She was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church and a member of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church.

 

On Nov. 23, 1946, as Mary Nagy, she married Stephen Bernath, who died on Feb. 17, 2000. Mrs. Bernath was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen G. Bernath Jr.; a sister, Ann Gergacz; and by two brothers, John Nagy and Joseph Nagy. Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Hootman of South Bend and Mary Ann (Don) Dettor of DeForest, WI; a son, John Bernath of South Bend; five grandchildren, John (Kristi) Vandygriff, Tom Hootman, Don (Bobbie) Dettor Jr., Denise (Bill) Jelinek and Melissa Dettor; seven great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Vandygriff, David Vandygriff, Jeff Vandygriff, Jacob Dettor, Joey Dettor, Jack Dettor and Max Jelinek; two sisters, Frieda Uyhelji of South Bend and Evelyn (Louis) Pola of Granger; and a brother, Robert (Janice) Nagy of South Bend.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a Rosary will be recited at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
