MISHAWAKA - Sister M. Leonissa Bertha, OSF, 79, of St. Francis Convent, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Community Hospital after an illness. Sister Bertha was born as Margaret Bertha on Sept. 22, 1916, in Chalmers, Ind.

She entered the convent on Aug. 30, 1936, and received her Franciscan habit on Aug. 12, 1937. She was assigned to teaching in Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, and most recently at St. Agnes School, Chicago Heights, Ill., retiring in 1994. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Louise Schrader and Patricia Bertha, both of Lafayette, Ind.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Francis Convent Chapel. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the convent parlor, where a wake will be at 7 p.m. Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
