Charles A. Bickel, 80, of 234 E. Edgar, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness.  He had been a patient there for one month.  Born on Feb. 25, 1900, in Harvey, Ill., he lived here most of his life.  He was retired in 1965 from the Bendix Corp., South Bend, where he was employed for 28 years.  On June 21, 1919, in St. Joseph, he married Gertrude M. Palmer.  She survives along with two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Elsie) Ramsey of Mishawaka, and Mrs. Russell (Barbara) Hoffman of Dallas, Tex.; a son, David P. of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Dorothy Bickel and Mrs. Gladys Havens, both of Mishawaka; and two brothers, Robert and Donald, both of Mishawaka.  A son, Charles W., died in 1968.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member.  Rev. Phillip B. Smith, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.  Friends may call until 9 p.m. today in the Bubb Funeral Chapel.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church.  He was a World War I veteran, having served with the U.S. Army in France and was a member of American Legion Post 284.
