John G. Bickel, 81, of 27659 Osborne Road, North Liberty, died at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, after a brief illness. He was retired in 1968 after 33 years with the Johnson Outboard Motor Co., Waukegon, Ill.

Born on March 3, 1901, in North Liberty, he lived in the area most of his life. On Nov. 9, 1936, in Waukegon, he married Rita M. Needham. She survives with a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Emery of Leesburg, Ga.; a grandson; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Sheneman of Walkerton; and a brother,Dewey of New Carlisle.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the A.M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty. Rev. Gaylord Saltzgaber, pastor of the North Liberty United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, North Liberty.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. He was a member of the American Legion Post 365, and VFW Post 1954. Those organizations will conduct graveside military rites. He was a World War I veteran
