Dorothy Bixler

Dorothy (Kunkel) Bixler, 83, of Riverside Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 1:05 p.m. on Monday, June 9, in her home. She was born on Nov. 8, 1913, in Michigan City, Ind., to Louis and Florence (Oppermann) Kunkel. She had resided in the South Bend area since 1939, moving here from Michigan City.

 

On Nov. 28, 1935, in Michigan City, as Dorothy Kunkel, she married Dr. Louis C. Bixler, who preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Regan of Irvine, Calif.; a son, Louis B. Bixler of Grand Rapids, Mich.; and by four grandchildren, Stephen and Melissa Bixler of Grand Rapids, Michael Regan of Seattle, Wash., and Edward Regan of Gaithersburg, Md.

 

Mrs. Bixler was a homemaker. She attended Western College and was a graduate of Indiana University. She had taught fourth grade for a short time after graduation. She was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. James Episcopal Church, the Wednesday Club, Delta Gamma, American Association of University Women, and was a past president of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

 

Memorial services will be held at noon on Friday in the Cathedral Church of St. James, Rev. Frederick Mann officiating. There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place with entombment in Riverview Mausoleum. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Cathedral Church of St. James, 117 N. Lafayette, South Bend, IN 46601.
