Donald W. Black, 74, of Gertrude Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 1:20 a.m. Monday, June 24, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Dec. 6, 1927, to Robert T. and Mary E. (Griffith) Black in Greensburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Donald W. Black Jr.; his two sisters, Nancy Bossart and Ida Bish; and by six brothers, Homer, Robert C., Albert, Ross, Paul and Harrold Black.

 

On Dec. 18, 1948, in South Bend, he married Mary E. Glassman, who survives. He is also survived by two sons and their wives, David and Vera Black of Mexico City, Mexico, and Daniel and Kari Black of Edwardsburg, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Sean, Jeffrey, Olivia, Philip, Gabriel, Christopher and Mariel; one great-grandson, Adam Black; four sisters, Mary Lessman of Mt. Pleasant, Pa., Lorraine Lukacs of Greensburg, Pa., Judy Baker of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Shirley Febinger of Stephenville, Texas; his two brothers, Dean Black of Williamson, N.Y., and Alan Black of Connellsville, Pa.; and by a special daughter-in-law, Ruth Newsome of Goochland, Va.

 

Donald retired from Capital Technology in South Bend where he had been a special machine designer. He was a member of Calvary Temple for over 47 years, and was a veteran of World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1948.

 

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 26, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, with Pastor Bill Howell and Rev. Paul Murray officiating. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southgate Community Center, c/o Calvary Temple, 3717 S.
