Forrest Glenn Black

Forrest Glenn Black, 90, residing on Chicago Trail, New Carlisle, Ind., formerly of Fern Way, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Hamilton Grove Communities, New Carlisle. He was employed in sales at the Levy Ward Grocery Company and then manager of Self Service Wholesale Grocery Company, South Bend, retiring in 1972 after 32 years of service in the grocery industry. Mr. Black was born on April 5, 1912, in Cobden, Ill., to Robert and Lula M. (Ferrill) Black, and in 1936 moved to South Bend, coming from Cobden.

 

On June 13, 1936, in Marion, Ill., he married Sylvia I. Cerney, who preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 2001. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Mr. Black is survived by three daughters, Glenda I. (Don) Stanley and Peggy J. (Richard) Wesolowski, both of Granger, Ind., and Janice K. (Robert) Vernia of Carmel, Ind.; three grandchildren, Rhonda (Thomas) Niespodziany and Randy (Tammy) Stanley, both of South Bend, and Tracy (Ron) Rosenfeld of Palatine, Ill.; and by four great-grandchildren, Emily Grace Rosenfeld of Palatine, Christi Niespodziany, T.J. Niespodziany and Ed Niespodziany, all of South Bend.

 

Mr. Black was a 50-year member of Central United Methodist Church where he served on the Treasurer Board, Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Committee and Trustee's Board. He was currently a member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, South Bend. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Black was an avid golfer, and after retirement worked at Erskine Golf Course as a starter.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Sam Oliver will officiate. Entombment will follow at Riverview Mausoleum, South Bend. Friends may call one hour prior to services on Friday in the funeral home.
