Larry Martin Blad

Larry Martin Blad, 65, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on May 14, 2005, after an illness.

He was born in LaPorte, Ind., on Jan. 22, 1940, to Martin E. and Verna (Johnson) Blad. He was a student at the E.M. Morris School for Handicapped Children and was a local March of Dimes poster child. Larry attended Purdue University and graduated from Ball State University in 1963. Larry was active in managing baseball teams for Grace United Methodist Church, the South Bend Toasty Flyers and Cerulean Products.

 

After moving to the Washington, D.C., area, he received a master's degree in international law from The American University, Washington, D.C., in 1970. He was married to Jeanne Holland in Washington, D.C., on May 23, 1970. He worked for the regional governments in both Washington, D.C., and Detroit, MI, in law enforcement, planning for the implementation of the Safe Streets Act. Larry returned to South Bend in 1975. He formed the Alten Corporation in 1980. He was an active member of the Children's Dispensary Board and Camp Millhouse. He also served on the board of the South Bend Symphony Orchestra Association.

 

Larry is survived by his wife, Jeanne; son, Christopher; and daughter-in-law, Justine (Anderson). Also surviving are his father, Martin Blad; sister, Janis Hile; brother-in-law, Don Hile; and a sister-in-law, Wilda Komora. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne, and his mother, Verna.

 

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2005, at 11 a.m. in Grace United Methodist Church. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be sent to Camp Millhouse or to Hospice of St. Joseph County. Arrangements are being handled by the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., South Bend.
