Mitchell F. Bloom

Mitchell F. "Mike" Bloom, 94, of South Bend, passed away on January 8, 2005, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 29, 1910, in Detroit, Michigan, to Leo and Polly Bloom. He graduated from Central High School and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a member of OCS for the U.S. Army.

 

He married the former Bernice P. Brown, who preceded him in death on January 11, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his son, James L. Bloom, on July 25, 2003.

 

Mr. Bloom was employed by the Studebaker Corporation for 34 years as a tool-and-die maker and production supervisor. He retired from AM General Corporation in 1975 where he had also been a tool-and-die maker. He was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Cathedral where he served for many years as Scout Master for the St. Matthew's Boy Scout Troop. He enjoyed many winters vacationing in Florida, his Canadian fishing trips, and 45 years of summers at his cottage at Sister Lakes, Michigan.

 

Survivors include his children, Patricia I. Shoemaker of South Bend, Indiana, and William F. (Carol) Bloom of Sister Lakes, Michigan; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Polly Barnes of Wildwood, Illinois, and Clara Miller of Troy, Michigan; and his brother, Leo Bloom of South Bend. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Shirley Bloom of Lakeville; and by his special lady friend, Angie Trittipo of Mishawaka.

 

A funeral Mass will be held today, January 12, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Matthew's Cathedral. Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, where a Rosary service took place at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mitchell F. Bloom to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 941 E. 86th St., Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN 46240. The family would like to offer special thanks to Memorial Hospital, most notably to the nursing staffs on 8 South and 11 South, and a very special acknowledgment for the loving care by his granddaughter, Chris Bloom.
