Mary Sue Boatman

Mary Sue "Suzi" Boatman, 58, residing on East Ewing Avenue, South Bend, Ind., passed away early Monday morning, Dec. 25, in her home. Mrs. Boatman was employed for the past 24 years with the Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as a dietary supervisor. She was born on March 16, 1942, in Winchester, Tenn., as the daughter of Lloyd and Martha (Summers) Jernigan. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Whitehead; and by a brother, Joseph Jernigan. She had lived in South Bend since she was 9 years old, coming from Tennessee. She was a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Avalon Grotto, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of V.F.W. Post 1167.

 

On Sept. 14, 1965, in South Bend, as Mary Sue Jernigan, she was married to Carl L. Boatman, who survives. She is also survived by four sons, Ron D. (Mary) Boatman of Mishawaka, Ind., Ernie L. (Connie) Boatman of South Bend, Stephen P. (Trina) Boatman of White Pigeon, Mich., and Carl L. Boatman Jr. of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Adam, Casey, Mitchell, Natalie, Christine and Jana Boatman; six brothers, Stephen (Sherry) Jernigan of Bradenton, Fla., Marvin (Roxan) Jernigan of Fort Atkinson, Wis., Thomas Jernigan of Elkhorn, Wis., David (Storm) Jernigan of Palmyra, Wis., Ralph (Judy) Jernigan of South Bend and Mark Jernigan of Martinsville, Ind.; and by a sister-in-law, Kathy Jernigan, stationed with the Peace Corps in Haiti.

 

Services for Mrs. Boatman will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Rev. Don Carpenter, pastor of Southlawn United Methodist Church, will officiate. Cremation will take place, with burial at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, in the Palmer Funeral Home.
