Sylvester J. Bonek, 81, of 1506 W. Poland, died at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a long illness. He was retired from the Studebaker Corp. He was born on Dec. 31, 1897, in South Bend, and had lived here all his life. On Feb 1, 1921, in South Bend, he married Martha Reiter, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Whittington of Rifle, Colo.; four sons, Ernest, Eugene, Daniel and Robert, all of South Bend; twenty-two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Louise Luczkowski of South Bend. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. Rev. Edgar S. Szymanski, C.S.C., associate pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday. He was a World War I veteran, having served in the Army, and was a member of Pulaski Post 357, American Legion.
