SOUTH BEND - Alvah Walter Bowers, 97, of East Fox Street, died at 11:34 p.m. Sunday in Healthwin Hospital and Nursing Home. Mr. Bowers retired from Transpo as a bus driver after 36 years. He was born Sept. 22, 1896, in Harrison County, Ohio, and lived in South Bend most of his life.

On April 21, 1921, in Warsaw, he married Mary Vining. She preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Walter of South Bend; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A son, Robert, preceded him in death. He was a member of Amalgamated Transit Union.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
