Jay C. Bowsher Dies at Age of 78 - Illness of Several Years Fatal to Firm's Official
Jay C. Bowsher, aged 78, vice-president of the Nelson Bowsher company, died suddenly at 5:30 am today in his residence, 828 West Colfax Avenue.  He had been ill for several years and for the last two years was receiving treatment for a heart condition.  He had visited the Bowsher plant, 925 Webster street, Friday.  For the last 13 years Mr Bowsher had spent his winters in Coral Gables, Fla and his summers in South Bend.
Born in South Bend April 17, 1872, Mr Bowsher was active in Masonic circles and First Methodist Church.  He also had been active in the Flamingo Dinner club of Coral Gables, during his stays there.  Mr Bowsher and his late brother, Delevan D. Bowsher had established the N.P.Bowsher Fundation fund, an educational scholarship fund in the memory of their father Nelson P. Bowsher, the founder of the machinery company.  Delevan D. Bowsher died in March, 1949.  Mr Bowsher was a member of Portage lodge No. 675, F & AM.
In 1897 Mr Bowsher married Eva Spencer, who died in 1917.  In 1937 he married Eleanor Booher, who survives.  Other survivors are a son, Nelson Spencer Bowsher, secretary of the Nelson P Bowsher Company; a daughter, Mrs James R. Park, of Oxford, Miss and three grandchildren, Nelson P Bowsher II of Cleveland Ohio and Jeanne and Susan Pretz of Birmingham, Mich.

Funeral services for Jay Bowsher, 828 West Colfax avenue, will take place at 2pm Tuesday in First Methodist church.  Rev William E Clark, DD, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in City Cemetery.  Friends may call in the residence fro 2pm today until noon Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church.

Pall bearers for the funeral of Jay C. Bowsher, 828 West Colfax avenue, which will take place at 2pm Tuesday in First Methodist church, will be Roland Obenchain Sr, R.W. Goheen, John B. Campbell, Daniel H Sanders and O.A. Fulkerson, of South Bend and Dr John B Colwell, of Champaign, Ill.  Rev William E Clark, DD, pastor, will officiate.  Burial will be in City cemetery.  Friends may call in the residence until noon Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church.
