Rev. Lawrence Broestl CSC, 69, of the University of Notre Dame died at 12:15 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital, after a sudden illnees in his room on campus. He had taught German at Notre Dame for 28 years. He was born June 4, 1909, in Cleveland and graduated from Notre Dame in 1933.

 

He entered the novitiate of the Congregation of Holy Cross on July 1, 1930 and made his first profession on July 2, 1931 and his final profession on July 2, 1934. He was ordained at Sacred Heart Church on June 24, 1937 and from 1950 to 1951. He served at the University of Portland, Ore. From 1938 to 1944 and at St. Edward’s University from 1944 to 1948 and from 1950 to 1951. He taught at Notre Dame from 1948 to 1950 and from 1951 to 1966. From 1966 to 1968 he was chaplain to the Notre Dame students at Insbruk, Austria and had been teaching at Notre Dame since 1968.

 

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Minch of North Olmstead, Ohio and Mrs. Marie Frantz of Cleveland, and a brother Wenworth, of Cleveland.

 

A funeral mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call Sunday at Corby Hall Chapel, where a wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
