MISHAWAKA - Edith M. Broomall, 89, of Mishawaka, passed away at home on April 18, 2012. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Owen R. Broomall on July 13, 2000; her son, Dale R. Broomall on November 8, 1978; and by her sister, Lois Weiss in June 2010. Surviving relatives include her brother, George (Anita) Eckland of West Lake Village, California; daughters, Karen Krassner of Camarillo, California, Janet (Rob) Hagglund of Mishawaka, Laura Broomall of South Bend and Donna Broomall of Mishawaka. Also surviving are a son, Douglas Broomall; and two grandchildren, Michael Krassner of Australia and Jennifer Krassner of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Edith was born on March 23, 1923, in Evanston, Illinois, to the late George and Helen (Freese) Eckland. On August 3, 1946, she married Owen R. Broomall in Evanston, Illinois. Together they loved and raised six children, three dogs (Lady, Jacob and Shadow) and three cats (Midnight, Joshua and Winter). Edith was a loving mother and wife. She enjoyed painting, coloring, gardening, and taking care of her children. She was not only a loving mother, but she was also a teacher to her children. She taught them to cook, sew, iron clothes (the proper way), mow the lawn, wash clothes, and even how to hang them up on a clothes line in the back yard. She also instilled in them the importance of education. Many times she would say "knowledge is power" as a way to motivate her children to do their best in school. She constantly taught her children that it is more important to solve problems peacefully, than to use violence. Perhaps most importantly though, she taught them how to love and appreciate the little things in life. Edith also loved the Lord. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in 1979 at Harris Prairie Church of Christ. Her love for the Lord showed whenever she met anyone. Her calm and sweet demeanor was a witness that she loved the Lord. Edith will be missed not only by her family but to all of those who were blessed enough to meet and spend time with her. Visitation will be held today, April 22nd, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., and one hour prior to the funeral services at 11:00 a.m. TUESDAY, April 24, 2012, in the funeral home, with Pastor Edgar Erskin officiating, and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Edith's memory to The Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. E-mail condolences may be made at www.welsheimer.com.
