South Bend Tribune 3/7/2002

Br. Remigius (Hubert) Bullinger, CSC, 88, died after a long illness on Tuesday, March 5, in Dujarie House, Notre Dame, Ind. He was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Jackson, Mich., the son of William and Mary Ellen (Landers) Bullinger, third oldest of 14 siblings, of whom three brothers and three sisters survive. Br. Remigius attended Catholic schools in Jackson and Watertown, Wis. He joined the Holy Cross Brothers in 1928 and received the habit of the brothers in July 1931. He pronounced his temporary vows in 1932 and made his perpetual profession in 1935.

Completing his undergraduate work at Notre Dame in 1936, he began a long and distinguished career in Catholic education at Central Catholic High School, Fort Wayne, Ind., then spent a year at Holy Trinity H.S., Chicago, Ill. From 1938-43 he was on the faculty of Holy Cross H.S. in New Orleans, La., then did graduate studies in English at the University of Wisconsin. From 1944-52 he was assistant principal of Catholic Central H.S. in Monroe, Mich., then spent a year on the faculty of Notre Dame H.S., Sherman Oaks, Calif. From 1954-58 he was assistant principal of Cathedral H.S., Indianapolis, Ind. He returned in 1958 to Catholic Central in Monroe as principal. In 1961 he was named headmaster of Sacred Heart Military Academy, Watertown, Wis. In 1967 he became assistant headmaster at Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio. In 1972 he was assigned to do recruiting for the military academy. For the 1976-77 school year he served as principal of St. Peter and Paul School in Merrillville, Ind., taught briefly the following year at Santa Fe Regional Catholic School in Lakeland, Fla., and joined the faculty of Gabriel Richard H.S., Riverview, Mich., from 1978-84.

For the next seven years he served on the staff of St. Aloysius Parish in Detroit, Mich., after which he retired to the community's Casa Santa Cruz in Phoenix, Ariz., until poor health brought him to Notre Dame in 2000. A witty and gifted teacher of English as well as a teacher of teachers, Br. Remigius exercised his expertise for the benefit of thousands of grateful students. Added to his forte were the composing of incisive poetic encomiums for deceased confreres and of beautifully expressed reflections on special feasts of the Holy Cross community or of the liturgical year. His output was prodigious and was much appreciated, as was his incomparable, unfailing and impish sense of humor.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, in St. Joseph's Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 State Road 922. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 3:30 p.m., with burial immediately afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery on the village grounds.
