SOUTH BEND - Mary T. Burkhart, 90, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Tuesday, February 9, at the Healthwin Specialized Care Center, South Bend. She was born on May 23, 1919, in South Bend, to the late Suzann (Varga) and Joseph Benko. On November 19, 1938, in South Bend, as Mary T. Benko, she married George Eddie Burkhart, who preceded her in death on February 17, 1981. Mary was also preceded in death by a sister, Susan Freshley; and four brothers, Joseph Benko Jr., Alex Benko, Emery Benko and Steven Benko. Surviving Mary are two daughters, Joan (Denny) Reagan of Aurora, MN, and Jean ("Red") Mack of South Bend; six grandsons, Joseph (Patty) Febbo III of Milaca, MN, Jef Free of St. Paul, MN, Jay (Sandra) Boss Febbo of St. Paul, MN, William (Lyn) Mack II of Evansville, IN, Edward (Lisa) Mack of Madison, MS, and David (Kelly) Burns Mack of Chicago, IL. Six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive. Mary was a retired receptionist for the South Bend Clinic. She was a former member of the South Bend Shoe and Slipper Club, Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 2, and the Lady of the Elks. She loved her kids and adored her grandsons. Traveling, especially to the Minnesota woods and to Hungary, where her parents were from, was a true delight for Mary and she loved to dance. Mary was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives she touched. Memorial services for Mary will be at 11 a.m. Monday, February 15, in Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 SR 933, South Bend, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until services on Monday in the church. Cremation has taken place and burial will be at later date at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Welsheimer Family Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements.
